چکیده

1,3-Dichloropropene is a mixture of volatile cis and trans isomers and is primarily used as a nematocide to fumigate soil before planting. Commercial formulations of 1,3-dichloropropene contain stabilizers to inhibit degradation of the compound (Table 3-1). Older formulations contained chroropicrin or epichlorohydrin, whereas currently, the less toxic epoxidized soybean oil is used as a stabilizer. 1,3-Di chloropropene is released to the atmosphere in fugitive or accidental emissions from industrial sources (e.g., petroleum refineries, sewage treatment facilities, and electricity-generating power facilities) and also during its use as a fumigant. Accidental discharges into surface waters from industrial sources or leaching into groundwater from hazardous waste sites or agricultural uses also occur.

2. Relevance to Public Health 2.1 Background and Environmental Exposures to Dnt in the United States

Dinitrotoluene (DNT) is generally produced as a mixture called technical-grade DNT (Tg-DNT), which contains approximately 76.5% 2,4-DNT and 18.8% 2,6-DNT (with the remainder consisting of other isomers and minor contaminants such as TNT and mononitrotoluenes). It is primarily used as a chemical intermediate for the production of toluene diisocyanate. DNT is also used in the production of 2,4,6-...

2. Relevance to Public Health 2.1 Background and Environmental Exposures to Xylene in the United States

Xylenes (mixtures of ortho-, meta-, and para-isomers) are used as industrial solvents, synthetic intermediates, and solvents in commercial products such as paints, coatings, adhesive removers, and paint thinners; they are also a component of gasoline. Xylenes are released to the atmosphere primarily as fugitive emissions from industrial sources (e.g., petroleum refineries, chemical plants), in ...

2. Relevance to Public Health 2.1 Background and Environmental Exposures to 1,3-butadiene in the United States

1,3-Butadiene is a highly volatile gas that is used in the production of synthetic rubber; the major end use of the synthetic rubber is automobile tires. 1,3-Butadiene is also used for the production of high impact polystyrene and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) resin plastics The predominant source of 1,3-butadiene in the atmosphere is industrial releases, which can occur during manufact...

2. Relevance to Public Health 2.1 Background and Environmental Exposures to Strontium in the United States

Stable Strontium. Elemental strontium (atomic number 38) occurs naturally in the earth's mantle as a mixture of four stable isotopes, Sr, Sr, Sr, and Sr, and is present everywhere in very dilute concentrations. It is very similar to calcium in its environmental and physiological behavior. Strontium is generally found in molecular compounds with other elements. Commercially important strontium m...

Toxaphene is a manufactured pesticide comprising a complex mixture of hundreds of chlorinated terpenes. After DDT was banned from use in the United States in 1972, toxaphene became the most popular substitute. Control of pests on cotton crops was the principal use of toxaphene in the United States, although the pesticide was used to control a variety of insects on a range of crops and to eradic...
